Sarajevo hosted the OncoTrack Hackathon 2025 from 11th until 13th September, as part of the International Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering in Bosnia and Herzegovina (CMBEBiH 2025). Over three days, young innovators, researchers, and representatives from science, industry, and public administration collaborated to develop new solutions for oncology care. The participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Hungary joined the event.
Participants tackled two key challenges:
- Challenge #1: Development and optimization of a patient-pathway digital solution
- Challenge #2: Remote and telemedical extensive care for oncology patients.
The hackathon program featured expert sessions, including the workshop on Team formation and diagnostics with Mr. Ray Thomas (Emergent, UK), the workshop with Pitch preparation with Dr. Miro Hegedić (SMION, Croatia), a guest lecture on Risk-based therapeutic optimization in oncology by Ms. Lejla Razić (CEO, Pharmigon GmbH, Germany), and an IFMBE/Springer “Meet the Editor” session with Dr. Andrei Dragomir (The N1 Institute of Health, Singapore).
The winning teams were pronounced as follows:
- 1st place: Team Veritas (University of Debrecen, Hungary) for OncoCall, a mental-health screening and support platform.
- 2nd place: Team MedWire (International University of Sarajevo, B&H) for Sui Curra, enabling early at-home detection of colorectal cancer recurrence.
- 3rd place: Team Code4Care (International University of Sarajevo & University of Sarajevo, B&H) for their OncoTrack Pathway solution.
Prizes included money awards from IFMBE/EAMBES, business mentoring from Spicy Analytics and InterSystems, and research mentoring from Verlab Institute. The organizing partner of the event was EIT Health, supporting the dissemination and communication activities related to the hackathon.
Highlighting the impact and vision of the event, Dr. Adna Ašić from Verlab Institute, who served as the OncoTrack Hackathon Coordinator, joined winning participants Nedžmija Karić and Lamija Hečimović from Code4Care, and Hana Krnjić and Afan Haznadarević from MedWire, on the regional N1 TV morning show “New Day”, where they presented their innovative achievements to the audience:
